The FPS consults with The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy

The Federation of Petroleum Suppliers (FPS) recently met with The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to discuss the future of the oil industry and the Government’s proposed ‘Clean Growth Strategy’.

The FPS provided the government with insights into the industry and highlighted the fact that its members not only provide heating oil for homes, but they also play an important role in providing fuel for other industries including agriculture, construction, and road transport along with providing fuel for back-up generators for hospitals, schools, care homes and data centres.

As part of the BEIS’ Clean Growth Strategy, the department plans to decarbonise heating from the 1.2 million homes and 250,000 businesses who currently use heating oil. However, large scale electrification as proposed in the strategy, may not be feasible due to high installation and running costs. In addition, further work to regenerate the National Grid would be needed to avoid potential outages.

The FPS has urged its members to submit evidence in relation to the consultation and emphasises the vital role they have to play in helping the government make the right decisions on the future of off-grid heating solutions.

A more in-depth look at bio-fuels and the gradual phasing out of oil-based heating systems has also been encouraged by the FPS.
