Supermarket Fuel Savings?

With a price war between supermarket forecourts imminent, many business’s begin to question as to whether using supermarket fuel stations is a better method of refuelling company vehicles. This may be a suitable cost cutting solution for domestic fuel buyers, but there are a number of reasons why your business should continue to use branded forecourts in order to refuel efficiently.


Supermarket forecourts are often in the middle of busy towns and cities and therefore often require a detour to get to - which costs your business vital time - including time sitting in traffic. Whereas using a branded forecourt built around the UK’s main logistical routes mean your drivers can refuel on route quickly and efficiently.


Branded forecourts are generally built with time strapped fleets in mind - this is why their pumps are specially designed in order to pump fuel as quickly as possible into your tank.

HGV access:

Supermarket stations are not built to accommodate HGV’s, whereas many branded forecourts are built with high canopies and nozzles designed to fit HGV tanks.

Quality of fuel

Branded fuels such as Shell FuelSave, Esso Synergy and Texaco Supreme contain an additive package that helps to actively clean and protect your engine, whilst increasing efficiency allowing vehicles to travel further than on basic fuels. The average driver based on 10,000 per annum could save up £100 per year by paying often a little over 1ppl more for an increase of 5mpg.


As AdBlue is a specialist exhaust solution, many supermarkets cannot diversify to provide an AdBlue pump needed to ensure that Euro 4, 5 and 6 vehicles can continue their journey without having to worry.

Using a supermarket forecourt may save you 2ppl but these savings can be diminished if your fuel card provider adds hidden charges onto your card - including convenience charges. Savings can also be cleared by extra fuel burned to reach the supermarket and cost of time spent leaving your route.
