The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents is urging Transport Managers to act now to prevent collisions. The charity has significantly changed its fleet offering to provide more help and advice to Transport Managers.
RoSPA has split its fleet safety department into two sections offering consultancy and training. These departments work together to tailor advice and training to each organisations different needs.
The charity’s Managing Occupational Road Risk (MORR) product has also been adapted to make it more accessible to small and medium-sized companies. With varying levels - essential, advanced and premium - MORR can be adapted in more ways than before. For example, under the MORR scheme RoSPA can conduct desktop reviews of policies and processes for smaller companies or on-site audits for large organisations.
A Fleet Manager is responsible for educating drivers on how to take reasonable measures to prevent accidents. It is estimated that 25-33% of road casualties are work-related and directors must understand the importance of educating their staff on road safety. Should an accident happen that leads to prosecution, a defence of ignorance will not stand up in court.
RoSPA delivers courses aimed at directors and Senior Managers to help them understand the legislation surrounding road safety training obligations, as well as providing courses for drivers. The courses include defensive driving to minimise risk, eco-driving to reduce fuel use and vehicle familiarisation.
