75% of tyre related checks could be prevented

Highways England has released new research in partnership with Bridgestone that suggests that up to 75% of tyre-related motorway accidents could be easily prevented with the right vehicle maintenance checks and programs.

The study found that during 2016, more than 30 people were killed or seriously injured in motorway accidents due to illegal or faulty tyres. The most common cause of tyre failure was found to be road/ yard debris penetration (56%), poor inflation (18%), and poor vehicle maintenance (8%).

Highways England is urging drivers and transport mangers to implement an effective maintenance program with checks that can detect and prevent many of the failure methods noted in the study.
