Biofuels for home heating

Research commissioned by OFTEC has shown that biofuels may be a viable alternative to kerosene for homes that rely on heating oil. Concerns have been rising over the sustainability of 2.2 million homes in the UK & Ireland that currently rely on kerosene to fuel their homes, with the need to find a low emission alternative becoming a priority.

OFTEC’s reported has highlighted biodiesel made from waste blends such as Used Cooking Oils Methyl Ester (UCOME) and Tallow Methyl Ester (TME) as the main contenders for replacing traditional heating oils.

Following the report, a spokesperson for OFTEC has revealed that the organisation is working with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to ensure that oil heated homes are given the right solution to meet their needs.
