Get more from your heating oil this winter

Saving money on energy costs is a priority for many households, especially during the winter months when we rely more on central heating to keep us cosy. Get more for your money with these tips to help you conserve heat and keep costs down.

Service your boiler before the snow arrives

Don’t wait until your boiler breaks down. During the colder months your boiler will be under constant demand which can cause parts to fail under pressure. Book in your service now while theres still time to get any major problems fixed before the weather turns even colder.

Bleed the radiators

If you notice that your radiators aren’t heating up all the way to the top it could be that they need bleeding. This happens when bubbles of air become trapped in the system which prevent hot water from circulating properly and warming your home effectively. Bleeding the radiators will release these air bubbles and restore your radiators to full warmth.

Reflect Heat

The heat released from radiators is often absorbed straight into the walls behind them instead of spreading throughout the room. To combat this wrap tin foil onto cardboard and place it behind your radiators, this will reflect the heat back into the room and keep it warmer for longer.

Top up your oil as soon as possible

Waiting until your tank gets low before you top up can be risky, the cold weather means more demand for oil and longer waiting times. Don’t wait until your tank is nearly empty to top up - it could result in it running dry and the need for an engineer’s visit to restart it.

Turn the thermostat down

The World Health Organisation recommends a minimum of 21 degrees for living rooms during the winter, however in newer research, Public Health England sets a minimum of 18 degrees. It is estimated that turning your thermostat down by just one degree can save you up to 10% on your heating bill over the course of a year.

Block Draughts

Use soft furnishings such as curtains and draught excluders to stop warm air escaping your house.

Now is the time to order your heating oil top-up while demand is still low - don’t get caught out by the cold weather predicted to arrive soon!
